4 Beers and a Side Special – Bone Haus Brewery Beer School

Unique breweries offer not just good beer; but a matching, differential experience that entertains and satisfies the crowd. One of these breweries can be found in Fountain Hills, called Bone Haus, and is located mountainside with a view of the valley towards the City of Mesa and Scottsdale.

The interior decorations focus on a wild west theme, with dark wood flooring and wood-paneled walls covered with skeletons. One of their brewers, Rachel, teaches a monthly class called Beer School with Beerkowski, and should not be missed.

There is no kitchen here; however they have a good rotation of weekly food trucks, and a beer school event coming up features food pairings.

We started the Beer School with information about the historical origins of ancient beer and the gods they represent.

Beer School

The 4 Beers we sampled were:

– Carbide Light Blonde Ale

– Sonoran Shimmer Helles Lager

– Desert Wild New England DIPA

– Baron of Arizona West Coast IPA

The Carbide Light is a crushable Blonde Ale that is an easy drinker for summer. This beer has a low ABV%.

The Sonoran Shimmer had notes of corn, with a residual dryness to the aftertaste. Very crisp.

The Desert Wild is a double-IPA made with Citra, Strata, and Nelson hops. The Nelson hops give it a wine-like flavor adding to the depth of this beer, and it ends with a very smooth finish.

Baron of Arizona was my favorite out of the 4, which surprised me considering I am not a huge West Coast IPA fan, and it wasn’t bitter with a 62 IBU.

Another subject she discussed is how hops from America are more bitter and “in-your-face” in comparison to European hops.

Overall, I was impressed with the quality and variety of the beer they produce at their brewery. Rachel did an excellent job explaining their beers and where they came from.

You can also get beer to-go and other items, such as coffee.

Next Events

Don’t miss out on the next beer school, on August 8th, and a special beer school even with food pairings on August 21st.
